What does the name “Mars Hill” mean?

In antiquity, the Greeks called Mars Hill in Athens the Areopagus, which was a place of debate and deliberation. The Romans later called it Mars Hill.

In 1644, John Milton published a defense of freedom of expression called the Areopagitica, which was inspired by Mars Hill. Milton wrote, “Let her [Truth] and Falsehood grapple; who ever knew Truth put to the worse in a free and open encounter?”

Milton’s writings inspired America’s founders to write the First Amendment and protect freedom of speech. Our founders hoped this freedom would help future generations debate and fight fiercely but peacefully.
